How the GIF is converted

The crop you pick is applied to every frame, then each frame is resized to 128 × 128 and the animation is re-encoded. Frame timing and the loop are preserved, and transparency is kept where the GIF has it.

What happens when the GIF is too heavy

Animated emojis are the hardest to fit in 128 KB. When a first pass is too big, the tool reduces the file in this order, stopping as soon as it fits:

  • Fewer colours per frame.
  • Fewer frames, spread evenly, with delays merged so the total duration stays the same. Animations are capped at 50 frames.
  • A slightly smaller picture size as a last resort.

Tips for animated emojis

Short loops with a simple subject compress best. A 1–2 second loop with flat colours will fit easily; a long clip of a video will not. If the tool tells you your GIF still cannot fit, trim it first in a GIF editor. See the full guide: how to make an animated Slack emoji.

Frequently asked questions

Will my GIF stay animated?
Yes. An animated GIF in gives you an animated GIF out, with the loop kept.
What is the maximum GIF size I can drop?
Files up to 10 MB are accepted. The output is reduced to 128 × 128 px, at most 50 frames and 128 KB.
Can I convert a video to an emoji?
Not directly. Convert the clip to a short GIF first, then drop that GIF here.
